| The Arabic drum, Doumbek, is the heartbeat of Middle Eastern
music. It’s pounding down beats and sharp treble notes can be
combined to create compelling Arabic rhythms. These rhythms are
often performed to support other beautiful instruments found in
Middle Eastern music such as the oud, nay, kanoon, and
violin.
On
it’s own, the Doumbek makes a fantastic solo instrument on which the
drummer can create dazzling combinations, surprising accents and
beautiful rolls.
In
the Middle East, one of the highlights of a show in traditional
Arabic nightclubs includes a performance by a Bellydancer. The drum
solo is the ultimate opportunity for the drummer and dancer to show
off their skills. It can be a powerful exchange of technical and
emotional artistry that brings much anticipation and joy to
audiences.
Today, the power of the Doumbek has crossed land and sea and
is permeating American culture in many ways. It can be heard in
contemporary music selections including Desert Rose by Sting, in
concerts by pop star Shakira and live in the Bellydance Superstars
show - a Bellydance touring company, the first of its kind. Doumbek
playing is also on the rise as a popular hobby for men and women
alike as a way to transport oneself into the higher, altered states
that the creation of music provides.
With its past and future in mind, Ozzy has been studying and
playing the Doumbek professionally for five years. Being an Israeli
born, half Moroccan, half Egyptian, America, Ozzy is proud to be a
practitioner of this traditional Middle Eastern instrument and is
fascinated by its effect on bridging cultural gaps as well as
uniting friends and family with the ecstacy of rhythm .
Ozzy has been hired to play at many restaurants and private
engagements and can now be seeing playing for Bellydance Superstar,
Ansuya on her latest DVD release.
With a background of playing for Israeli bands, speed comes
easily to Ozzy. His showmanship and style is also reflective of his
hot blooded roots, having grown up in Miami where the Latin dance
and music scene puts passion and spice into all its
residents.
With a focus on Arabic drumming for bands and dancers, Ozzy
is currently residing in the San Francisco Bay area (California)
where he continues to perform at restaurants and parties. He is now
also available to teach private lessons. Students particularly love
his generous attitude, clear teaching skills and passion for the
drum. |
